Sergey Tokarev, a RefaceAI investor, talked to the media about the success of Reface (ex Doublicat), a face replacement app that works on GIF-images. He said that the app crossed the mark of 5 million downloads in July. Moreover, it reached the tops of the AppStore and GooglePlay charts in several countries.
The Reface app allows its users to replace faces on GIF-images. A user can replace a face displayed on a GIF-image with his own or anyone else faces by using the app. One can become a famous actor, athlete, singer, celebrity, or even a politician through this entertaining app. Sergey Tokarev explained the success factors that have made the app popular in various regions of the world.
Unique Face Replacement Technology
The development team of RefaceAI, Ukrainian IT development campany, worked hard on developing their own face replacement technology based on the machine-learning algorithm. After more than three years of hard work, the team successfully developed a unique Artificial Intelligence-based technology, Generative Adversarial Nets (GAN), to replace faces on photos.
The team went on to work on the development of a face replacement app that works on phots, Reflect. The Reflect app was released by RefaceAI last year. It even grabbed the attention of Elon Musk, a renowned IT businessman. “Musk used Reflect to swap faces with Dwayne Johnson. He posted the results on his Twitter account,” said Sergey Tokarev. His tweet created a chain reaction on social media. It helped Reflect to go viral on social media. Eventually, it helped Reface as well which was released on January 12, 2020. Moreover, the unique technology used in the app produced more realistic results as compared to its competitors. Most of the face replacement app developers are using computer-generated imagery (CGI) technology. However, CGI technology has many drawbacks as compared to GAN technology.
Success Story of Reface
The Reface app was released by RefaceAI in January 2020. The app grabbed at least 750000 downloads in the first two months. One month later, the app surpassed the milestone of 1 million downloads. In the next two months, the downloads were speeded up and reached the mark of 4 million downloads. In July, Sergey Tokarev told the media that the app had beaten TikTok and Privatbank in Ukraine. In Thailand and the Philippines, the app went viral pretty quickly. As of July 28, the app was ranked 17th in the Entertainment category of AppStore in the US.
The RefaceAI investor said that the uniqueness and quality of the technology used in the app helped it to become popular. He added that the popularity of the app speeded up by the showbiz celebrities. He mentioned the names of Jerry Heil and Olga Polyakova, the Ukrainian singers. They used the Reface app in the production of their music videos. These videos were viewed by hundreds of thousands of people.
Tokarev announced that they were working to master a new technology to replace faces on videos. Moreover, his company will develop software that will detect fake videos made by using face replacement apps. At the moment, the Reface app is running way ahead of its competitors in the race of replacing faces on photos and videos. The users are enjoying the almost accurate results produced by the app. It is quite famous in Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Brunei as well. Tokarev seemed satisfied with the performance of the app all across the world.
